Low hour and reliable Yanmar 315 Hp 6L Turbo diesels
The 30 Flybridge was a natural step for Skipjack, a company whose principle is building solid, seaworthy boats for people who spend a lot of time fishing and cruising. The fishing part of the equation is reflected in the 30's large uncluttered cockpit, which boasts 75 square feet of open space. There's a 21 inch wide transom door to starboard that leads to a wide fiberglass swim platform supported by four massive stainless steel brackets.
The transom top contains a plumbed, 30 gallon bait tank and a ten cubic foot insulated fish box, both with spring loaded lids. The raw water wash down is located to starboard, and a conveniently located hot/cold fresh water cockpit shower. The cockpit is surrounded by padded bolsters or coaming pads, and the entire deck is covered in grippy molded-in non skid.
The cockpit sole raises on a hydraulic ram to provide wide open access to the engines and other equipment, such as fuel filters, batteries and bilge pumps.
The hull is 100% hand laid fiberglass, supported by massive fore and aft spruce stringer system encapsulated in three ounce mat and 24 ounce roving.
Back on deck, a welded stainless steel ladder to starboard leads to the flybridge, which offers exceptional visibility all around the boat. A huge storage compartment is located behind the helm, and the passengers seat folds down to form a comfortable lounge or additional sleeping space.
The console is laid out in a wrap around fashion that affords easy viewing of all gauges, and there is lots of room for flush mounted electronics.
Moving forward, I really liked the level bow, which is also covered in molded non skid and surrounded by a welded, waist high rail. The entire area is clean and uncluttered, making for an incredibly stable platform something anyone who loves scrambling to the bow and casting to fish will appreciate. The sturdy pulpit is five inches thick at its base and features a toe rail; no doubt it was designed by someone who liked casting baits to marlin and swordfish.
Weighing in at 16,000 pounds (dry weight) the 30 has a solid feel at any angle to the sea. According to Skipjack's factory tests, the 30 hits a top speed of 35 mph at a wide open 3300 rpm with 315hp Yanmars. Recommended cruise is 25 knots at 3100 rpm, and range is 450 miles with 300 gallons of fuel.
The 30's hull features a sharp entry to reduce pounding, and a "full" bow section that allows the boat to track straight in a following sea. Double strakes increase lift for planing at lower speeds, while the reverse bow flare and chine deflect spray for a dry ride.
As mentioned, Skipjacks are designed for people who like to spend a lot of time on their boats, so the company doesn't skimp on the below decks amenities. Overall, the cabin is very roomy and bright, thanks to its 6'6" headroom and numerous windows. A double berth is located in the bow, and there's a long L shaped settee to starboard that converts to form a second double berth. Ample storage space is located below and behind the settee, including room for several big game outfits.
Standard galley features include a microwave, a refrigerator, and a two burner electric stove top. The head is located against the aft cabin bulkhead and features Corian counter tops and a stainless steel sink with removable shower head faucet.
Of course these are but a few of the many features Skipjack packs into the 30. To see the rest you'll just have to check one out yourself.
